Sirajuddin Haqqani. $5 million for the head of the new Taliban interior minister
As the leader of the Haqqani network, Sirajuddin Haqqani had entered the Afghan caretaker government’s line-up. So he remains one of the most wanted by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
On, Tuesday, the Taliban appointed Sirajuddin as Acting Minister of Interior in the caretaker government, until the formation of a government representing the Afghan people.
Washington considers the Haqqani network, founded by his father, a terrorist. And one of the most dangerous factions that have fought US and NATO forces over the past two decades in Afghanistan.
According to the FBI’s website, whoever provides information on Haqqani’s whereabouts will receive a reward of $5 million.
Sirajuddin Haqqani is a wanted person. Moreover, he is connected with an attack in January 2008 in the Afghan capital Kabul. The attack killed 6 people, including an American citizen.
Moreover, Haqqani targeted US and coalition forces in Afghanistan. Furthermore, he plotted the 2008 assassination attempt on former Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
The Haqqani network is very close relation with “Al-Qaeda” and for carrying out several suicide operations. This network is responsible for a number of the most violent attacks in Afghanistan in recent years.
He assassinated prominent Afghan officials and holding Westerners hostage. Before releasing them for ransom, or prisoners, such as US soldier Bo Bergdahl. The soldier was released in 2014 in exchange for 5 Afghan detainees from Guantanamo Bay.
The Haqqani fighters, known for their independence, fighting skills, and lucrative trade, are apparently responsible for Taliban operations in the mountainous regions of eastern Afghanistan. And they have a strong influence on the movement’s decisions.

After the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan, Jalaluddin Haqqani established close relations with Arab jihadists, including Osama bin Laden. Then allied himself with the Taliban, which took control of the country in 1996. And Jalaluddin Haqqani served as a minister in the Taliban regime. He remained in this position until the movement was overthrown with the American intervention in 2001.
In 2018, the Taliban announced the death of Jalaluddin Haqqani after a long struggle with illness. Then his son Sirajuddin Haqqani took over the leadership of the network.
And with putative bases of the network along the border in northwest Pakistan. The network has emerged more within the Taliban leadership over the past years. Moreover, Sirajuddin remained as deputy leader of the movement in 2015.
Anas, the younger brother of Sirajuddin Haqqani, has already served a prison sentence. and recently held talks with Karzai and former Vice President Abdullah Abdullah, following the fall of Kabul.
